Pupil Premium was introduced by the Government in April 2011, as one of its measures aimed at reducing inequalities. A total of £625 million was allocated to Local Authorities and Schools.

The Government allocates additional funding aimed at supporting pupils who are:

  • Eligible for Free School Meals

  • Looked after by the Local Authority

  • The children of Armed Service personnel

Data collected from schools in January each year, is used to determine the amount of funding a school will receive. Schools decide how the premium is used in order to best support the raising of attainment for these pupils.

In 2012-2013 the Pupil Premium was extended to include pupils on roll that are known to have been eligible for Free School Meals (FSM) at any time during the past six years. A total of £1.25 billion was allocated nationally.
